Though you find clear waters ranging to the vast blue skies of autumn
How can that compare with the hazy moon on a spring night?
– Keizan
Spring Sesshin at Cloud Mountain is beckoning, with morning mists, orange blossom, frog chorus, and the haunting call of the mopoke. The human world is complicated, but within it, zazen is simple -- as simple as the way the breeze stirs and the leaves concede to it. Keizan’s “hazy moon of enlightenment” is the mind awake and at home within the richly layered complexity and challenges of this life, and sesshin is the place where we touch, settle and convey that mind, in deep, silent companionship with others.
The traditional form of Zen sesshin is as old as the hills by now: plenty of zazen, walking meditation, simple formal silent meals, regular opportunity for dokusan, and evenings devoted to teisho (supported by the frogs down in the pond) – one continuous opportunity to refresh your practice and discover it all over again, standing up alive, brand new.
