What's Next?

Dear Big Summer Sitters,

It was indeed a pleasure to sit with you all through the summer, and whether you sat online in the mornings with Dave and Jazz, or whether you sat onffline and joined us for the Introduction to Zen practice talks, I hope you felt very welcomed.

You are warmly invited to join us for a period of teaching with Susan Murphy Roshi and Kynan Sutherland Roshi in Taking Part in the Gathering and to sit quietly on the Sundays between with Deborah in Quiet Sitting in the Open Dojo. You will need to be a member for both these opportunities, and if not already a member, you can take out a Trial Membership to test the waters. Please check our website for more information.

And finally, you may wish to check out It's Alive where sangha members and guests share their experiences in the care of…

Friendship

For me, this Sit, felt an offering of friendship. A trust, viscerally experienced, that those who said they would be there, were! Isn’t that something. No small thing. Thank you Dave. Thank you Jazz, Thank you Deborah.

Gratitude

Thank you Deborah, thank you Roshi Susan and Roshi Kynan, thank you dear Sangha and a special thanks to Dave and Jazz and the Dawn Sitters - it's been an uplifting and grounding six weeks. I felt sad that this time together had ended, but this morning I rose as usual for the 6am "sit", and - stepping outside first to greet the day - was welcomed by the radiant sliver of the waning moon: tomorrow it will start its journey to fullness again. Continuous practice!

Deep appreciation for all.

Deepest gratitude to Deborah and all who created and held the container of the Big Summer Sit. For me it has been an anchor of cool, calm connectedness throughout the summer, each session bringing me back, here. Thank you.

Thank you for being here Julia ❤️ Thank you for your heartfelt words in the meeting today.

I'm reminded of this exchange with Zhaozhou (text from Roshi Susan's book "A Fire Runs Through All Things"):

---

When a woman asked Zhaozhou, “What is this?” he placed the question back into all our hands by replying, “The heart of the one who asks.” He is not deflecting a heartfelt question about the nature of the boundless reality brimming in every detail of this. Even the unsettled state of your own uncertain heart is a gateway. “Enter here,” he suggests.

You are welcome here

Thank you Jazz and Dave for opening the dojo each morning and welcoming everyone into deepening practice and experience of sangha.

This afternoon's Dharma Talk with Susan and Kynan was a special walk with Sangha in the broadest sense - from Buddhist roots in India, to China and Japan, Europe and America and this continent we call Australia; to the red earth and the ancestors who tended this land so that we too can arrive, right where we are, knowing this place, breathing with it and as it. "When you know the place where you are, practice begins." Let's continue to practice, opening in the most natural way to the welcome constantly on offer.

Check the website if you would like to hear more from Susan and Kynan in Taking Part in the Gathering. Join Deborah on alternate Sundays for a Quiet Sit together, with an opportunity to share experiences,…

Thank you Deborah 🙏 such a wonderful walk through the Dharma with you. With so much fear and hated seeming to be alive in the world right now, so much rupture, this sitting together feels like an act of peace. A powerful response!

Country

My experience is that country is in your apartment to. It doesn’t cease just because we

build on it. We can access the dimension of Country at any place, no matter our physical location.

As a tool to remember that we have a dedicated nature table in our home. Country is like zen. You don’t have to go anywhere to find it💚

Yes! I was thinking the same thing Karen, beautifully said. Even the grass growing up through the cracks in the pavement, the pigeons, golden sun on a brick wall 🙏

We had a lovely sit this morning on the last morning of the Big Summer Sit. Dave had the good idea of opening the space for a chat at the end, and the unanimous mood of the group seemed to be that regular zazen together has helped us all feel grounded and togetherness. Thank you everyone for being there and for our teachers Susan, Kynan and Deborah for your wonderful teachings that guide us. I'm looking forward to seeing you all this afternoon @ 4pm in the Summer Dojo for our final afternoon session of the BSS this year :) 🙏🌱

These mornings sits have been incredibly meaningful to me. They got me out of bed even when I didn't want to and provided such a supportive container for zazen. Seeing the familiar faces each week and Dave and Jazz's consistent presence was such a good way to start each morning. It's amazing how close you can feel with people whose voice you have never heard. Thank you everyone.
