Fighting Giants: Stopping Fracking in WA’s Kimberley Region

At this It’s Alive! gathering, Simone van Hattem, WA Campaign Coordinator with the Lock the Gate Anti-Fracking Alliance, joined us for a screening and discussion of Fighting Giants — a film telling the story of Traditional Aboriginal Custodians and community members working to protect the Kimberley from fracking.
The film focuses on Black Mountain Energy’s Valhalla Gas Exploration and Appraisal Program, a major proposed fracking project in the Kimberley region of north-western Western Australia. It explores the potential impacts of fracking on water, wildlife, climate and Country, and the efforts of those resisting the industrialisation of this ancient landscape.
Fighting Giants prompted a strong response from those gathered, with discussion ranging from sadness and dismay at the potential destruction to the resilience and perseverance required for sustained environmental activism. Following the film, Simone shared further information about the campaign and the wider significance of the struggle against fracking in Western Australia.
