Dalong’s ‘Mysterious’… and the inherent poetry of Zen
Zen Master Dalong was a notable 13th c teacher whose life - like Dogen’s - bridges Chinese and Japanese Zen. He issued famously strict and detailed instructions for practice – yet his translucently clear responses to the deepest questions were entrusted to the language of poetry.
For example, when a monk asked "What is the mysterious?", the master responded with a most quietly intimate poem, one that brings vast emptiness and the most tender fact of mortality into congruence.
“The breeze brings the water's voice close to my pillow;
The moon carries the mountain's shadow near my bed.”
